Destiny 2's second Act of Revenant is now available, opening up the iconic Prison of Elders for Guardians to explore once again. The new Tomb of Elders activity is a throwback to an arena-style activity from the original Destiny, transformed into a more traditional three-player activity with difficult modifiers, fast-paced combat encounters, and updated rewards.
Clearing out the Tomb of Elders itself isn't too difficult, but it has some minor changes compared to previous seasonal activities. In this guide, we go over how to unlock the Tomb of Elders, give a brief overview of how it differs from other activities, and showcase the rewards you can earn by clearing the Prison of Elders.
Tomb of Elders is unlocked upon reaching Act 2 in the Revenant seasonal questline. After you complete the first Act quest chain, head back to the Last City and speak with Mithrax to start the quest. You'll need to play a match of Tomb of Elders and its more difficult variant, Contest of Elders. The activity is located in The Last City portion of the Director, located below the seasonal Onslaught playlist.
Tomb of Elders is a three-player matchmade activity where you must triumph over your enemies in fast-paced combat encounters. It's similar to Destiny's typical three-player seasonal content from previous years—Menagerie, Savathun's Spire, Riven's Lair, etc. Complete two combat encounters, defeat a boss, and then claim your rewards before going again.
The main difference here is the inclusion of a dynamic modifier system that adjusts combat difficulty in each room, similar to how Prison of Elders worked in the original Destiny. Variks has spiced up the Prison of Elders with dozens of new modifiers that greatly increase the challenge of encounters. Here are a few examples:
These modifiers reset upon completing an encounter.
Activity modifiers (Surges, Overcharge, etc.) always remain active.
As for the activity itself, it's a fairly straightforward arena-style activity. Your fireteam must complete a listed combat encounter to progress through the Prison of Elders. These objectives are your standard variety of enemy slaying, sometimes broken up with a sub-objective such as destroying generators or collecting explosives. Complete the objective to unlock the next encounter and repeat.
Once your team has cleared two rooms, it's time to fight the boss. You'll need to remove the boss' immunity shield before it can be damaged. The method of doing so will depend on the boss. For example, The Mechanist requires you to collect spare explosives and rig one of the nearby Ether Canisters to explode. The Cabal boss requires you to destroy a Thresher first and eliminate floating Psions. In any case, the boss will become vulnerable for a short duration once the mechanic is done. Try to kill the boss in this window to finish the activity.
Warden Challenges
Some encounters will have a bonus objective you must complete within a short time frame, such as killing enemies with Scorch Cannons or Heavy ammo. Completing this bonus objective will award Tonic reagents exclusive to this activity, notably Tomb Flakes.
Conversely, some boss encounters have a critical objective that must be completed within time. Failing to do so will impose debuffs on your squad until the encounter ends.
Contest of Elders is a more challenging variant that runs for multiple boss fights, not just one. Contest of Elders is set to 2,020 Power, limited revives, and additional combat modifiers—notably Galvanized, Overcharge buffs, and Banes. You'll receive more loot at the end of each boss fight, but it'll be significantly tougher than your average Tomb of Elders experience. Come prepared. Conest of Elders has matchmade and solo variants.
Now that the boss is slain, your treasure awaits. Completing the Tomb of Elders will reward you with Tonic reagents and seasonal weapon rolls. Two of this season's weapons can only be obtained from this activity and Tomb of Elders-themed tonics: Scavenger's Fate (65 RPM Void Shotgun) and Gridskipper (540 Void Pulse Rifle).
Beyond that, Variks' reward chests are a decent source of Glimmer, Enhancement Cores, and some common crafting reagents for Tonics. Rarer materials seem more likely to drop on higher tiers of the Contest of Elders, but we can't confirm this for certain.
