As it is in any BioWare game, romance is a key part of the story in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Away from the fight against elven gods and dragons, you will spend a lot of time developing relationships with your companions. If you want to, you can also make those relationships blossom into romantic ones.

Before committing to a character, there's a lot to think about. Not only do you need to carefully pick who you start a romantic relationship with, but you also need to consider the role they play in your party and how interested you are in their side quests. First of all, you need to know all the characters you can romance in the game.

All Characters You Can Romance

You can romance any of the companion characters in the game. They aren't all available from the start of the game, with you being introduced to them as the story progresses, but all seven romance options are:

  • Bellara
  • Davrin
  • Emmrich
  • Harding
  • Lucanis
  • Neve
  • Taash

There are story choices in the game that can delay when you're able to romance a character.

How To Start A Romantic Relationship

Once you've chosen who you want to pursue a romantic relationship with, head to their room in the Lighthouse. They should have an orange exclamation mark or an orange speech bubble next to their icon on the map. Speaking to them will then start a side quest or a conversation that can improve your relationship.

Once you're in that chat at the Lighthouse or during the side quest, you'll see that some dialogue options have a heart as their icon. Where you would normally see the path icon, the thumbs up, or something else, you'll spot a big red heart. That's the option you should choose if you're pursuing a romantic relationship, without exception.

Then, as you have more conversations and complete more companion quests for them, you'll eventually be given the option to 'begin a romantic relationship' with the character. You'll then get a prompt to commit to an exclusive relationship with them one quest later.

All Consequences Of Romance

Once you progress a relationship to the point of it being romantic, you'll notice a few things change, some of which help you in other aspects of the game.

  • You're able to hit the maximum relationship level, which is Level 10. The level is called something different for each character.
  • You'll start to have different conversations with your partner that reference the romantic nature of your relationship.
  • You unlock a skill and a legendary armor set for the character you romance.
  • While not tied directly to romance, you'll unlock Hero of the Veilguard status for the companion. It increases support and skill strength, and is important at the end of the game as part of some vital story choices.
