Cybertruck adds 150 miles range in 15 minutes as Tesla fixes the 4680 battery charging curve

The Cybertruck is Tesla's first electric vehicle with a modern 800V powertrain architecture, and its chief engineer Lars Moravy is on record saying that it takes under 20 minutes to top it off at a suitable charger.

Tesla doesn't offer such fast Superchargers, though, and the Cybertruck charging times used to be excruciatingly slow. While Lars most likely meant the typical 20%-80% charging scenario, the pickup was still far from such speeds.

Even when taken to a fast 800V charger that can take advantage of its architecture, the Cybertruck took double the time that Lars promised to reach to 80% charge.

Some blamed the 4680 battery, as the Model Y batches that used to come with such cells from the Texas Gigafactory exhibited a similar slow charging curve.

Fastest Cybertruck charging speed

The Cybertruck, however, comes with the newer 4680 Cybercell battery that offers increased energy density and, apparently, much faster charging. Armed with real-world data about the Cybertruck battery behavior during fast charging sessions, Tesla delivered a software update that it said fixes the charging curve.

Cybertruck owners then started reporting much faster sessions, and one even registered a record 330 kW peak rate at one of Tesla's upgraded V4 Supercharger test piles that actually deliver 350 kW speeds.

Well, that record has now been broken by a 600 kW charger that delivered a 405 kW peak rate to one of the Cybertrucks that were registered in Europe in recent months.

When the local Ejoin charging network inaugurated its first 600 kW station, it decided to demonstrate its capabilities with a Cybertruck. It tookTesla's electric pickup just two minutes to hit 405 kW peak speed at 7% battery, which then tapered off way more gradually than before to hit 113 kW average charging speed.

At the proverbial 20-minute mark, the Cybertruck was already at 60% charge, and another 15 minutes brought it to 80%. The 123 kWh battery pack in the Cybertruck took about an hour to be fully charged, instead of an hour and a half.

In other words, the Cybertruck can now add at least 150 miles of range in 15 minutes if hooked up to a suitable charger. Tesla is now trialing 350 kW upgrades at select V4 Superchargers and, hopefully, it will speed up the process as the amount of Cybertrucks on the road increases.
