A rare coin issued to commemorate one of Oasis' best-loved albums might not be worth much as currency, but it's worth much more at auction.

Ticket prices for the legendary band's reunion tour have made the headlines this week after entry to some shows increased by as much as 100% thanks to 'dynamic pricing'.

It prompted an outcry from fans and a wave of criticism from the music industry as a whole - and now it seems the government may step in to prevent such occurrences from happening again.

But if you're the owner of one particular piece of historic Oasis merchandise, you would have had enough funds to cover your concert costs sitting in your pocket.

That item is a commemorative £2 coin, issued in 2000 to celebrate the release of the Gallagher brothers' fourth studio album, Standing on the Shoulder of Giants.

Coin experts will know that engraved around the edge of every standard £2 coin is the phrase, Standing on the shoulders of giants. In this instance, the word 'shoulders' is plural, referencing one of Isaac Newton's most famous quotes from a 1675 letter to Robert Hooke.

It read: "If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants."

Inspired, now 57-year old Noel previously revealed he spotted the inscription on a £2 coin in the pub and quickly scribbled it down on the inside of a cigarette packet. Despite missing the S, the name stuck and the album went straight to number one upon its release in February 2000, selling over 300,000 copies in its first week.

The Oasis coin, however, is much scarcer - only 200 were minted. It features the band's five members at the time on the bust - Noel, younger brother Liam, Andy Bell, Gem Archer and Alan White. The reverse features the band's logo of the day and the year, 2000.

A desirable piece among collectors, the rare coin rarely comes up at auction almost a quarter of a century later. One, which appears to have made its way to the US over the years, was recently listed on eBay for $360 (£274 approx.).

Online collectible record store EIL, which previously sold the coin, described it in the product's listing: "Super rare 2000 UK promotional-only '£2 coin' with bronze centre stamped 'OASIS 2000' on one side & a group silhouette on the other, and the album title engraved into the silver perimeter surround - housed inside its original circular protective display case, this example even retains the original zip-loc style clear outer bag! Only 200 examples of this unusual collectable were minted."

One X user who proudly posseses one penned: "My band, Bliss 66 was signed to Epic in 2000... I definitely (not maybe) have one of these."

And a second proudly declared: "The Oasis £2 coin. Always wanted it and found one few years back."
