The developer behind EmuDeck has now dipped its toes into the world of retro hardware after months of teasing. For reference, EmuDeck simplifies the task of setting up retro emulators on anything that can run Android and Windows, as well as the Steam Deck. While the hardware project was only revealed today on the EmuDeck Discord, it is already available to back on Indiegogo.
Unfortunately, it is currently only possible to back the EmuDeck Machines project if you live in Canada, the European Union and the US. Thus, EmuDeck fans elsewhere are out of luck for the time being. On top of that, it remains to be seen whether EmuDeck plans to expand availability, if at all.
At any rate, EmuDeck Machines consists of two mini-PCs, plus an accompanying GPU dock. However, the latter will only be compatible with EmuDeck's more expensive option, the EM2. By contrast, the EM1 must make do with the UHD Graphics iGPU and its 24 Execution Units (EUs) inside the Intel Processor N97.
As a result, the EM1 seems somewhat restricted to emulating older titles than playing current triple-A games. In comparison, theAMD Ryzen 5 8600Gand itsRadeon 760MiGPU will handle plenty of modern games at 1080p, albeit with low graphics settings and AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) set to balanced. Allegedly, the external docking station adds anAMD Radeon RX 7600GPU(curr. $249.99 on Amazon)to the mix, which would boost the EM2 to a 4K capable machine in many areas.
At the time of publication, the EM1 and EM2 are available for $331 and $675 in the US. According to XDA Developers, it has been informed that EmuDeck hopes to begin shipments 'on Christmas Eve 2024'. As ever, crowdfunding campaigns are prone to delays, meaning that there is no guarantee that this shipment estimate will actually be met. Added to that, EmuDeck expects the docking station to be available in early 2025 and will only start development once its $69,680 campaign goal is met.
