TON Token Dives 15% as Telegram Founder Pavel Durov Gets Arrested on Terrorism, Drugs, Fraud Charges

Pavel Durov, the 39-year-old entrepreneur behind the popular instant messaging service Telegram, was arrested Saturday night at Le Bourget airport. The charges against him include terrorism, drugs, complicity, fraud, and money laundering, and he could face up to 20 years in prison.

The native token TON, which is actively used in Telegram, has already reacted to the news, falling 15% in price and 61.3% in total value locked in the blockchain.

The arrest and charges have sparked a lot of discussion on social media, especially in the crypto community. Among those who commented on the situation was Max Keiser, who is known for his maximalist views on Bitcoin (BTC) and his role as an advisor to Nayib Bukele, the president of El Salvador.

In a recent post on X, Keiser highlighted the importance of Bitcoin's creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, remaining anonymous to avoid legal problems. He contrasted this with other altcoins, such as XRP and Cardano, which he believes are more vulnerable to such issues.

“1. Do you understand NOW why Satoshi chose to remain anonymous? 2. Everyone connected materially with all shitcoins; ETH ADA BNB SOL XRP TRX + 30,000 others can have the exact same thing happen to them. ONLY BITCOIN IS SECURE,” Keiser wrote.

Keiser's comments underscore the broader concern among some crypto enthusiasts that the authorities' pursuit of Durov could ultimately lead to Bitcoin being targeted as well. This is due to the fact that while Telegram and Bitcoin are not directly connected, both Durov and Satoshi have faced legal challenges from various government agencies.

Some observers believe that if the authorities are able to successfully prosecute Durov, it could set a dangerous precedent for other crypto figures, including Bitcoin's creator. Others, however, maintain that Bitcoin is fundamentally different from other cryptocurrencies and that it would be much more difficult for the authorities to pin down Satoshi's identity, even with advanced Interpol techniques.

Despite these differing opinions, the arrest and charges against Durov have certainly put Bitcoin in the crosshairs, at least to some extent. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether the authorities' actions will have any direct impact on Bitcoin or its creator.
