Intel allegedly lost big chunk of market share in Korea due to poor product launches and Raptor Lake stability issues

Anyone who has been keeping tabs on the current state of the DIY PC market will know that Intel has been having a rough time. Not only is the company grappling with bad financial performance, but the once-dominant chipmaker is also dealing with stability issues of its 13th and 14th-gen Raptor Lake products. According to news out of Korea, this has led to Intel losing a considerable chunk of market share since the launch of the 14th-gen Raptor Lake Refresh CPUs in October 2023.

ZDNet Korea reports, via Danawa, that Intel’s share of the Korean market has shrunk to less than 45% as of July 2024. In stark contrast, AMD has been steadily gaining market share since last year and, save for a drop in June, now enjoys more than 55% of the Korean PC market.

To show how concerning these numbers are for the company, Intel enjoyed a healthy lead with a massive 60% market share to AMD’s 40% in February 2023. However, Team Blue steadily lost share and, in December 2023, both players stood at 50%. Since the widespread emergence of Raptor Lake stability issues early this year, Intel has reportedly lost its grip on the Korean market even further.

Falling DDR5 prices and Ryzen 5 7500F seem to have helped AMD

Aside from Intel’s misfortune, falling DDR5 prices, the release of the A620 motherboards, and the affordable Ryzen 5 7500F seem to have helped AMD move more AM5 products. As such, AM5 CPUs made up for about 65% of the total AMD CPUs sold in July in Korea while the sales of AM4 chips have reportedly dwindled to “the 30% range”.

Arrow Lake can correct Intel’s course

While Intel faces an uphill battle in the DIY PC space, the company has a chance to recapture some market share with Arrow Lake as AMD’s Ryzen 9000 CPUs have received a lukewarm reception. So, if Arrow Lake can bring a solid gen-on-gen improvement over the 14th-gen CPUs in terms of both efficiency and performance, Intel can finally catch a break and take the fight to AMD.

However, it is easier said than done, especially when it comes to gaming performance, as Intel will also probably have to contend with the Ryzen 9000X3D chips. Chances are high that the latest iteration of AMD’s 3D V-Cache chips which are known to be superb gaming CPUs could launch in October, the same month as Intel Arrow Lake.

Whatever the case ends up being, one thing is quite clear, Intel desperately needs a few wins or the situation could get even worse for the company.
