The cause of this incident was that Google discovered two serious software vulnerabilities (CVE-2024-32896 and CVE-2024-29745) and confirmed that these two vulnerabilities had been actually exploited. These vulnerabilities could lead to an elevation of privilege, allowing an attacker to exploit an application to obtain sensitive information, including work and personal information, that would otherwise be inaccessible.

The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has listed these two vulnerabilities in the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) directory. Due to the severity and potential harm of the vulnerability, the government requires federal employees to complete system updates within 21 days.

While this notification is currently only for federal government employees, as many organizations and businesses follow government security standards, all Galaxy phone owners are advised to install the August security update as soon as possible.
