Major South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Upbit has announced the addition of two new meme coin pairs. PEPE and BRETT will now be trading against the dollar-backed stablecoin USDT on the exchange.

Meme coin PEPE was launched in April 2023 on the Ethereum chain by a group of anonymous developers. Inspired by the popular internet meme character Pepe the Frog, the coin quickly gained traction among investors and was added by major crypto exchanges, including the Binance behemoth. Notably, PEPE is among the first meme coins to be launched after the initial dog breed-themed coins, such as SHIB and DOGE, dominated the meme coin space.

Meanwhile, BRETT was launched in February 2024 on the Base chain, which was built by the Coinbase trading platform. The coin is named after Brett, a character from the “Boy's Club” comic strip by American cartoonist Matt Fury.

The addition of PEPE and BRETT to Upbit is significant, as it could further boost the visibility and liquidity of these meme coins. At the time of writing, PEPE is ranked 1,138th and trades at $0.00000720, while BRETT is the 69th largest cryptocurrency with a price of $0.09318, according to CoinMarketCap.

As expected, the news of the new listing had an immediate impact on the price of both meme coins. PEPE rose by over 13% in the last 24 hours, moving from $0.00000720 to $0.00000816 before facing a slight price reduction of nearly 2%.

On the other hand, BRETT, which is now the 69th largest cryptocurrency on CoinMarketCap, demonstrated a stronger reaction to the new listing in South Korea. Over the past 24 hours, the token surged by 25% and trades at $0.09318 at the time of writing.

Justin Sun anticipates millions of meme coin users joining Tron (TRX) chain in 2024

On Monday, Tron blockchain founder Justin Sun tweeted about the success of meme coins in the crypto space. In his tweets, Sun highlighted the role of the community in the success of meme tokens and the plans to integrate meme coins on Tron.
