Snapdragon 4s Gen 2: Qualcomm's new 4 nm SoC announced for low-cost 5G smartphones

Last year, Qualcomm showed off the second iteration of its entry-level smartphone AP: the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2. Even though its successor, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 3, has shown up on Geekbench, it will not be the next Snapdragon 4 series chip in the lineup. Instead, it is the newly-announced Snapdragon 4s Gen 2.The 's' in its name indicates it is a weaker version of its non-s counterpart, and this is confirmed by its spec sheet.

The 4 nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 (codenamed SM4635) comes with an 8-core CPU with 2 performance cores (2.0 GHz) and six efficiency cores (1.8 GHz). Qualcomm doesn't explicitly mention the chip's GPU, but one can reasonably assume it to be an Adreno 619L variant. OEMs can pair it with LPDDR4 2,133 memory and UFS 3.1 storage.

Qualcomm uses its in-house Spectra ISP on the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2. It can support up to a single 32 MP camera module or two 16 MP modules with Zero Shutter Lag at 30 FPS and supports still image capture at up to 84 MP. Video recording prowess is limited to 1080p 30 FPS. Additionally, the phone can only support up to a 1080p 90 Hz screen.

Wireless connectivity options on the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 include sub-6 GHz 5G (NSA/SA), Bluetooth 5.1, 802.11 b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi (no Wi-Fi 6), GPS (dual-frequency), GLONASS, BeiDou and NavIC. OEMs can fit it with a USB 3.1 port and charge their batteries with the Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ standard. There's no word about when the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 will debut, but we can expect it to show up with a low-cost smartphone soon.
