University of Wyoming Set to Inaugurate the UW Bitcoin Research Institute this August

The University of Wyoming will launch the UW Bitcoin Research Institute in August to enhance the caliber of Bitcoin research through rigorous, peer-reviewed studies.

The institute was announced on X (formerly Twitter) on July 28 by Bradley Rettler, an Associate Professor at the University of Wyoming and Bitcoin proponent. Rettler will lead the BRI as its director. He criticized the current state of Bitcoin research, calling it "abysmal" and emphasizing the need for more high-quality academic publications.

Highlighting an example, Rettler pointed out flaws in a 2018 study led by Professor Camilo Mora from the University of Hawaii, which claimed that Bitcoin emissions could have a drastic impact on global warming by 2048. Rettler identified errors in the study related to Bitcoin’s difficulty adjustment and block size cap, which he said influence public perception and policy.

The Bitcoin Research Institute will begin operating with the Fall semester and will organize annual summer workshops, award academic prizes, and host weekly seminars. It is designated as a nonprofit and will accept Bitcoin donations to fund its research, pledging not to sell any donated Bitcoin.

Wyoming has become a crypto-friendly state in the U.S., thanks in part to influential figures like Senator Cynthia Lummis and Caitlin Long, the CEO of Custodia Bank. Senator Lummis recently proposed the Bitcoin Reserve bill, which aims for the U.S. to acquire 5% of Bitcoin's total supply to help reduce the national debt.

Moreover, Wyoming lawmakers have enacted legislation protecting the privacy of digital asset owners and offering legal support for decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs).

This establishment of the UW Bitcoin Research Institute marks a significant step in advancing scholarly understanding and public discourse on Bitcoin, utilizing Wyoming's supportive regulatory environment for digital assets.

This concise news piece highlights the key developments surrounding the launch of the Bitcoin Research Institute at the University of Wyoming, ensuring clarity and relevance for readers interested in cryptocurrency and academic research.
