Keep an eye out for the London 2012 Olympics 50p coins in your loose change, as some of them could now be worth more than £2.

The coins were released in 2011 as part of a set of 29 to commemorate the summer games in the capital.

Now, TikTok user @CoinCollectingWizard is urging everyone to check their wallets after discovering the coins have seen a huge increase in value.

Among the coins in the collection are the football, tennis and table tennis 50ps, which have previously sold for £125, £75 and £2 respectively, reports the Mirror.

Discussing the Table Tennis 50p coin from the 2012 event, he said: "Almost 1.2million coins dated 2011 were struck to enter circulation. The coin features two people playing table tennis or ping pong if you prefer.

"Table tennis made its Olympic debut at Seoul 1988. The first player to score 11 points wins each game based on best of seven games for singles and best of five for team matches.

"If you are lucky enough to come across this table tennis 50p, then you are looking at around £2 in circulated condition and around £5 in brand new condition."

The Olympic 50p pieces were decided via a public contest back in 2009, with the Table Tennis 50p alone drawing a staggering 30,000 design entries.

The poster asked their followers: "Do you or have you seen this 50p in your change? Or have you seen any of the other Olympics coins, let me know in the comments."

After sharing his find, the post garnered heaps of likes and numerous comments. One user commented: "Nice ending! " while another shared: "I have a lot of them."
