An expert has tipped off coin enthusiasts that a new King Charles III 50p piece, featuring an Atlantic Salmon design released at the end of last year, could fetch "mega money" - and it might just be sitting unnoticed in your wallet or purse.
Coin enthusiasts have been alerted by an expert to a new King Charles III 50p piece featuring an Atlantic Salmon design, which could fetch a significant sum of money and may be lurking undiscovered in your wallet or purse.
According to online collector communities, these 50p coins were minted in relatively small quantities compared to others. A social media post by @thecoincollectoruk on TikTok revealed that these rare finds "are selling for £50 on eBay and Facebook coin collector groups," making them the second most valuable 50p coin after the Kew Gardens edition.
"The [version of the Salmon 50p] in circulation is thought to have a mintage as low as half a million - making it among the rarest 50ps of all time. The buzz around this coin is getting bigger, and as a result the price is increasing."
While some speculate that the Atlantic Salmon 50p could be worth around £100, the expert also noted that its current value may drop if future mintage figures from the Royal Mint are higher than expected. Coin owners must now decide whether to cash in or hold on to the coin in the hopes of making even more money, according to the Mirror.
"Salmon fever is definitely a thing," commented one person in response to the TikTok video. Another stated: "I just sold 9 of them and have 10 on the way."
The incredibly rare Kew Gardens 50p coin, which was released in 2009 to mark the 250th anniversary of the iconic London landmark, is highly sought after by collectors. The standard version can sell for up to £250, with only 210,000 ever minted.
A gold-proof version of this coin recently sold at auction for an astonishing £7,000.
