Toncoin price has dipped over 12% after the announcement of the arrest of Telegram's founder and CEO, Pavel Durov, in France.
Telegram founder Pavel Durov was arrested at Le Bourget airport on Saturday evening, as reported by French media. The arrest was made around 8 PM as Durov disembarked from his private jet at the airport. He was accompanied by his bodyguard and a woman at the time of the arrest.
The operation was carried out by the Air Transport Gendarmerie (GTA) based on a French search warrant issued by the OFMIN of the national directorate of the French judicial police. This warrant was activated due to ongoing investigations into Durov’s connection to various criminal activities through his platform, Telegram.
According to Le Parisien, the investigation began in 2021 after a complaint was filed by the French government. The government accused Telegram of failing to cooperate with authorities in removing extremist content from its platform.
French authorities have also accused Telegram of being used by drug traffickers and other criminals to communicate and organize their activities. In 2022, French police carried out a large-scale operation against a drug trafficking network that was using Telegram to coordinate its activities.
Durov's arrest comes amid increasing pressure on Telegram from governments around the world. The platform has been banned in several countries, including Russia, Iran, and China. In the United States, Telegram has been sued by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for allegedly failing to register its TON cryptocurrency project with the agency.
