Apple is working on redesigning iOS and macOS systems.
Gurman pointed out that this design update is more visual than the one from iOS 6 to iOS 17 Change comes gently. He mentioned that Apple does plan to update the design of iOS this year, but he does not think it will be a complete overhaul and will not completely imitate the design of visionOS. Gurman expects we'll see iOS 18 changes this summer, but work on macOS has just begun and isn't expected to be completed until 2025 or 2026.
Since Apple first launched the Vision Pro operating system, many people have speculated whether Apple will update the design of other operating systems to match visionOS’s 3D Button and glass texture background. However, this design is primarily intended for platforms built around see-through movies, allowing users to "see" the world around them through an open app window. This concept doesn't exactly apply to iOS, which is more focused on the actual use of mobile devices and apps.
However, it’s been a while since the last major design changes to the iPhone and iPad. Any sort of visual refresh would be an exciting launch, and it's also expected to include major AI-driven features. In fact, Mark Gurman has previously said that Apple considers iOS 18 to be an ambitious update that will bring major new features and designs. Apple will announce its next-generation operating system at its WWDC conference in June.
