iOS 17.2: How to improve the reliability of emergency alerts
In iOS 17.2, Apple has improved the reliability of emergency alerts on iPhone. Read on to find out what's changed.

Apple designed its mobile operating system so you can receive emergency, government and public safety alerts on iPhone. In an emergency, depending on your location, your iPhone can display the following:
-
- Alerts issued by your country’s government
- Alerts involving an imminent threat to safety or life
- Extreme Weather Conditions Alert
- Amber Alert (Missing in America: Broadcast Emergency Response)
- Public Safety Alerts
Government alerts are on by default on iPhone. This type of alarm is accompanied by a special alarm-like sound. In some countries, users cannot disable government alerts. Elsewhere, menus or toggles for these alerts can be found at the bottom of Settings ➝ Notifications.
In iOS 17.2, Apple has added new local awareness options for emergency alerts. Apple says enabling local awareness uses your approximate location to improve the timeliness, accuracy, and reliability of emergency alerts. If your region or region supports this option, you can find the toggle for Local Awareness in Settings ➝ Notifications ➝ Emergency Alerts.
Whether it’s a severe weather warning, Amber Alert, or other important notification, this setting should increase the likelihood that important alerts won’t be missed due to technical issues.
