Microsoft has started rolling out the Windows 11 2022 update, and with it comes a ton of new features. One of them is the HDR Calibration app, a new way to help you calibrate your HDR monitor so you get consistent colors when using HDR in games or watching content. While Microsoft is promoting the two things together, you can actually download the Windows HDR Calibration Tool in the original Windows 11 build—you don't need the 2022 update.

Still, this is a fairly new feature, and if you're not sure how to use it, we're here to help. If you want to calibrate the HDR effect on your monitor, you need to do the following:

Check if your monitor supports HDR

If your monitor does not support HDR in the first place, the Windows HDR Calibration app will won't run, which makes sense. So, if you want to use it, you have to make sure your monitor supports HDR.

To do this, open the Settings app (it should be in your Start menu) and clickShow. Here you can see if HDR is enabled.Note:If you have multiple monitors connected, you may need to select the correct monitor in the panel at the top of the page.

If the HDR toggle is grayed out, your monitor might not support it, or if you're using a battery-powered laptop, HDR might be disabled. Click on the HDR option (anywhere but the toggle button itself) to see more information.

On this page you'll see if your monitor supports HDR, if HDR video streaming is enabled, and a few other options. You need to make sure your monitor says "Supported" for bothHDR Video StreamingandUsing HDR.

In Windows 11 2022 Update, there is also aHDR Display Calibrationbutton on this page, which is a link to download the Windows HDR Calibration app.

Download and use the Windows HDR Calibration app

Using the Windows HDR Calibration app on Windows 11 is relatively simple, and the app itself does a good job of explaining the process. Here's what you need to do:

  • Download the Windows HDR Calibration app here, or use the link on the page shown above.
  • Start the application. If you have multiple monitors, drag the application window to the monitor you want to calibrate. If your monitor supports HDR, the app will look like this.

  • ClickStartand the app will show you three test patterns, one at a time. For each of them, you need to drag the slider at the bottom of the screen until the test pattern is no longer visible, then click Next after each test.
The first pattern tests minimum brightness, so you need to drag it until the entire screen is pure black. The second test is for maximum brightness, so you want to achieve pure white. Finally, the third test is maximum full-screen brightness, again you need to drag the slider until you get a pure white image.
  • After completing these three tests, you will be prompted to adjust the display color. This just changes the saturation of the color, it mostly depends on your personal preference. By default, it should be set to the lowest level, but you can drag the slider until the HDR image looks the way you like.
  • You will see a final screen showing what your monitor looks like before and after calibration. You can choose a name for the HDR profile you created and click
  • Finishto save it. If it doesn't look right, clickto return toto adjust the brightness of each test pattern again.
After completing the calibration process, you are all set. If you have a multi-monitor setup and all of your monitors support HDR, you'll need to run a calibration process for each monitor. You should then be able to get the most out of your HDR gaming and other content. You can also enable Auto HDR in the HDR settings page we showed above, which will upgrade games to use HDR even if they weren't originally designed to support it.
