Developer "adlo" today announced work on porting Xfce's Xfwm4 window manager code to Wayland. This new "Xfway" compositor is being developed using the wlroots library, which is used in smaller Wayland is becoming more and more common among synthesizers.
A wlroots-based port of Xfce xfwm4 is in development and making good progress, but has known limitations. There is feature regression compared to alternative libweston-based ports.

This new port also moves Xfwm4 to the Meson build system. Wlroots was started by the Sway compositor project and is increasingly used to share code between Wayland compositors and provides many core building blocks for compositors for easy reuse.

Upstream Xfce 4.18 is looking at Wayland application support, but the full transition to this lightweight GTK-based desktop may take a while. The Xfce wiki outlines the plans to ensure that Xfce applications will at least run well on Wayland, such as the Weston compositor, but not full Wayland ports of Xfce. The release engineering page states, "It is currently unclear which Xfce version will target the full Xfce Wayland conversion (or if such a conversion will occur)."
