Windows 11 Patch Tuesday includes improvements to default browser switching

At the end of March, Microsoft released build 22000.593 (KB5011563) as an optional "C" update for Windows 11 preview builds. While it contains many improvements, the highlight of this release is that Microsoft has finally made it easier to switch your default browser in Windows 11.

As Bleeping Computer noticed, the latest Patch Tuesday build (KB5012592 / OS Build 22000.613) includes all the changes present in the KB5011563 preview build, meaning the enhancements to default browser switching are now generally available All Windows 11 users.

As a reminder, the release version of Windows 11 introduced a cumbersome way to switch the default browser, requiring users to manually change the association of each file extension (such as HTML and PDF). Considering Windows 10 allows you to switch your default browser with a single click, this move received a lot of criticism from the public.

With last month's optional Windows 11 builds, Microsoft made some improvements in this area by allowing you to change the default browser for certain core file extensions (such as HTML) with a single click. However, it still doesn't switch the default settings for all extensions, and Edge remains the default application for opening PDF, SHTML, SVG, FTP, and other web-related files unless you manually change all the file associations one by one.

While Mozilla appreciates the changes so far, it still believes more can be done in this area. Vivaldi, meanwhile, wants the European Union to step in and investigate Microsoft for malfeasance and anti-competitive behavior.

Regardless, existing improvements that were previously only available through optional updates can now be received through the latest Patch Tuesday update for Windows 11 (KB5012592 / OS Build 22000.613). Since this update also inherits other changes from last month’s preview build, check the changelog here as well.
