CSS-Tricks Chronicle XXXVI

This month's roundup covers updates on my projects, CSS-Tricks, and related sites.

I recently attended Front Conference in Zurich, Switzerland. It was my first time in the city, and I thoroughly enjoyed both the city itself and the conference organizers. While I was unfortunately battling jet lag during my opening talk, it was a valuable experience.

My talk, titled "How to Think Like a Front-End Developer," actually ended up being more of an exploration of how we've all essentially become full-stack developers.

ShopTalk Show continues its strong run! We haven't missed a week in ages, and I still love creating the show.

A recent highlight was a discussion with Dave about technology choices for a greenfield project under various scenarios. We regularly feature guests such as Tyler McGinnis, Adam Argyle, Rachel Andrew, and Lara Hogan.

CodePen is also progressing nicely:

• Pens can now be exported with a build process. After npm install, you get an offline version for working with Markdown, Sass, React, Babel, etc. Create a blank Pen, export it, and you're ready to go.
• We're increasingly using React for CodePen's development, and the benefits are becoming increasingly apparent. It's a great fit for our site. For instance, we rebuilt item display and grids, enabling features like pinning to instantly apply across the entire site. Filtering and view options work the same way.
• These small improvements are incredibly satisfying, especially concerning our "Private by Default" feature.
• We've added user blocking and reporting capabilities.
• New high-contrast syntax highlighting themes improve accessibility and aesthetics.
