Zero hands up.

Yesterday, I polled a room of web developers. I asked if they knew iOS versions of Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Brave, etc., are restricted from using their own rendering engines.

Zero hands went up.

Let's clarify this. iOS browsers are limited to using WebKit. Other browsers exist, but they're forced to use this engine (not Blink or Gecko). Therefore, Chrome and Firefox on iOS essentially run on Safari's engine, albeit with some limitations (for instance, third-party content blockers are incompatible).

This is crucial information for developers. Features like service workers, supported by Chrome's desktop and other versions, are unavailable in the iOS WebKit engine used by non-Safari browsers. This applies to both Chrome and Firefox on iOS.
