pppoe refers to the point-to-point protocol on Ethernet. It is a network tunnel protocol that encapsulates the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) in the Ethernet framework. Essentially, it is a protocol that allows the creation of point-to-point tunnels between two Ethernet interfaces in an Ethernet broadcast domain. PPPoE is divided into two phases: PPPoE discovery phase and PPP session phase.

What is pppoe

PPPoE (English: Point-to-Point Protocol Over Ethernet), a point-to-point protocol on Ethernet, is a point-to-point protocol Protocol (PPP) is a network tunneling protocol encapsulated in the Ethernet framework. Since the PPP protocol is integrated into the protocol, it can realize authentication, encryption, compression and other functions that traditional Ethernet cannot provide. It can also be used for Ethernet protocols such as cable modem and digital subscriber line (DSL) to provide users with Access service protocol system.

Essentially, it is a protocol that allows the creation of point-to-point tunnels between two Ethernet interfaces in an Ethernet broadcast domain.

Taking pppd commonly used in Linux systems as an example, it supports IP, IPv6 and IPX network layer protocols on the PPP interface.

It uses traditional PPP-based software to manage a connection that does not use serial lines but a directed packet network similar to Ethernet. This standard connection with login and password facilitates billing by the access provider. Furthermore, the other end of the connection only assigns an IP address when the PPPoE connection is established, thus allowing dynamic reuse of IP addresses.

PPPoE is developed by UUNET, Redback Networks and RouterWare. Published in RFC 2516 description.

PPPoE is divided into two stages:

  • ##PPPoE discovery

Since traditional PPP connections are created on serial links or ATM virtual circuit connections created during dial-up, all PPP frames can ensure that they reach the opposite end through the cable. But Ethernet is multi-access, and every node can access each other. Ethernet frames contain the physical address (MAC address) of the destination node, which allows the frame to reach the intended destination node. Therefore, before exchanging PPP control messages in order to establish a connection on the Ethernet, both endpoints must know the MAC address of the other end so that the MAC address can be carried in the control messages. This is what the PPPoE discovery phase does. In addition, a session ID will be created at this stage for later use in exchanging messages.

  • PPP Session

Once both parties to the connection know the MAC address of the other end, the session is created.

Disadvantages during use

  • Before using the Internet, you need to dial through PPPoE first, not a computer Go online immediately after booting. (Go online immediately after booting, see DHCP for details. Some ISPs provide the first PC to obtain a fixed IP from DHCP)

  • Some ISPs will disconnect PPPoE users at scheduled intervals. In order to save operating costs and IP address occupation, it is disadvantageous for users who need to stay connected to the Internet for a long time. However, some ISPs provide users with services where PPPoE can allocate non-fixed IPs or fixed IPs.

  • Windows after Windows XP, Mac OS Such as Internet 300, RAS PPPoE, etc.
