Review: EA SPORTS FC 26 Delivers on Gameplay, Presentation
EA SPORTS' soccer series continues to be the testing bed for new technology and ideas. EA SPORTS FC 26 is highly community-driven and offers over 20,000 players on nearly 1,000 clubs and national teams. Once again, the game offers everything a soccer or football fan would want. The community feedback goes directly towards gameplay, and as a result, is possibly the best the series has seen. The game also introduces Archetypes that are seen in other EA SPORTS titles and new Live Challenges. The game continues to build on its HyperMotion technology. There are keywords in these statements, such as "continues" and "once again," however, which is a sign that not a lot is actually being added in this release.
Community Feedback Gameplay
The highlight of EA SPORTS FC 26 is the gameplay. Playing games in the series is highly entertaining, and the new options for gameplay further indicate this. The devs have offered two gameplay experiences with Competitive and Authentic options. Competitive is the fun and fast-paced gameplay the series is renowned for, but swings more in an arcade direction. It's fun, addicting and fluid as this mode matches the intensity of the audience in attendance.
The Authentic Gameplay option slows the game down and is geared more towards the Manager/Player Career. In EA SPORTS FC 25, a big focus involved the strategy elements of the sport and building teams a certain way. This does carry over, and the best way to witness these strategies in action is by slowing the speed down and seeing what player ratings and matchups make a difference. Defenders are much more responsible and the AI plays more conservative. You won't see many offensive players break free on a lead pass in this mode. This option is for enthusiasts of the sport, but it also doesn't take that "fun" element out of the series' gameplay.
The community feedback goes directly towards gameplay and as a result, is possibly the best the series has seen.
With the option to pull multiple dribble types, the Authentic Style feels like the long game of suspense. Passing the ball more appropriately builds to yield a bigger sense of reward when you're finally able to break through and swing the momentum. This isn't about booting it down the field and hoping to outrun a defender around the outside. The difficulty levels in the game, which are adaptive, offer a wide variety of challenges, so anyone can find the right fit to have fun. There's a happy balance of difficulty and fun to be found.
There are only slight concerns with how the AI logic works this year. Depending on the mode, defenders tend to lock in more than in the past. Under the Competitive option, they do seem more aggressive, but don't apply as much pressure in the Authentic option. Goalkeeper play provides more confidence than in past games, but the AI seemingly shuts down corner kicks well. There's an abundance of offside penalties and it feels the AI logic should be smarter in some of these situations. Yes, it has happened in the past from being aggressive, but some of these this year are either on the line or a dumb decision by the AI.
Authentic Broadcast Presentation and Passion
The full entrance to a match in EA SPORTS FC 26 is a spectacle to behold. Madden and College Football could learn a thing or two from this. Showing fans in a pub, walking to the stadium and all the build-up to starting the match takes a few moments, but it's fully worth it. More importantly, there's an option to experience it or skip it. The game returns the same commentators and sideline reporter. The sights and sounds, including cut-a-ways to the crowd fully encompass the look and feel of this sport in its most chaotic moments.
The stat overlays in the game are modern, if not futuristic, and welcome. No longer are the games just end to end with a cutscene for substitutions. There's a good bit here to keep players engaged. All the replays look fantastic as do the post-match scenes. The crowd shots during gameplay, especially after a goal, get the heart pumping when the perfect storm of excited commentary, shaking stadiums, thousands of fans losing it in one camera shot and happens. Other than having random replays from other games be added, there's not much more than can be done. This presentation really does everything right.

Changes to Career Modes in FC 26
EA SPORTS FC 26 returns both the Manager and Player Career. As a player, you can create one (which doesn't tie into the Avatar for online and it should), utilize a current player or use an Icon much like the EA SPORTS F1 series has. Archetypes have been added this year that allows players to develop 13 different traits that are all individually inspired by greats of the sport. These are designed to mold a player towards one of these Icons, but not bridging this with the players to be used in Rush, which has the same options, is strange.
The Manager Career allows players to now jump in at different points in the season as it's always online. There are Live Start Points or players can just start from the beginning. If you're an armchair GM of the sport, there's so much here. Starting a career and having to simulate a month and not be able to jump straight into games is an issue, but this is how the sport goes. There isn't another sport out there that does transaction like this one does as players go in-between leagues. Live Challenges will help to keep players engaged in their Manager Career, but other than these slight updates, there isn't a lot here.
A Plethora of Returning Modes
Outside of these slight changes to Career Modes, not much else has changed since last year. The Archetype structure carries over to Clubs Mode, where friends are still required to do certain things and it doesn't consist of just matchmaking. Live Events in Club Rush offer something slightly different, but this mode is the go-to online mode that is tons of fun and quick to get in and out of. The new Be-A-Goalkeeper system offers something worth trying but will benefit those who like playing that position the most, but this is only a fraction of players.
Ultiamte Team introduces Gauntlets as FUT gets some new coats of paint. This is, of course, the microtransaction card mode. Player feedback played a big role in changes to the mode. Only the Competitive Gameplay option can be used for this, as new Live Events and a revamp to the Rivals and Champs modes will eliminate Playoffs. Those that do FUT will be really happy to te changes. These are broken down below.
Jumping directly into Kickoff still offers a plethora of quick modes while also tracking records and stats against the AI. Having the choice of nearly 1,000 clubs, both men's and women's team means there are so many teams and ways to experiment and play with. It's also worth noting that this will most likely be the last time Messi appears in a video game. There are a lot of ways to enjoy this game with its multiple modes, but outside of some refinements, these were previously available.
Visual and Audio Technical Aspects
It cannot be overstated just how important the audio aspect is here. The range of the crowd noise and the crowd chants heighten specific moments during matches. When you play in a rainy atmosphere with fog at a distance, this is a whole mood that isn't felt in any other sports game. Every game feels different based on the weather and the lighting. There are over 120 detailed stadiums to experience filled with immersive details that are presented with passion.

Player models remain the best in the business. Whether it be jersey or hair physics or the details of the player faces, FC 26 is the most realistic looking sports game on the market. The fans look stellar across the board as well. Nothing technological appears to have changed, but the game is smooth and details can also be seen at a distance during gameplay. The animations remain fluid and the driving force of the gameplay in the series. It all just sums up to create an experience that is superbly fun to play.
Closing Comments:
EA SPORTS FC 26 is extremely fun to play and you don't have to be a fan of the sport to enjoy it. The changes to the gameplay from community feedback not only add variety, but provide some of the best results in the series. While there's slight AI logic issues, the responsiveness of the gameplay plus the option to slow it down with Authentic Gameplay shows just how well the strategy element works. Besides some touchups on the game modes, there really isn't anything new here, but there's still an abundant amount of ways to play. Clubs Rush is still fantastic to play and the game remains beautiful and authentic. The presentation elements bring out the greatness that drives this sport. The portion off the field just feels too familiar.
