How to Type Special Characters and Emoji on macOS? (Keyboard Viewer)
macOS provides three convenient ways to input special characters and emoji: 1. Enable the keyboard viewer to display key combinations in real time; 2. Use the character viewer to browse, search and insert symbols; 3. Set text replacement shortcut phrases to automatically expand into symbols.

Use the Keyboard Viewer to see and insert special characters and emoji on macOS—no memorizing shortcuts needed.
Enable Keyboard Viewer
Go to System Settings > Keyboard > Input Sources , turn on Show Input Menu in Menu Bar . Then click the input menu (usually a flag or “ABC”) in the menu bar and choose Show Keyboard Viewer .
Keyboard Viewer appears as a floating window showing your current keyboard layout. Hold down modifier keys (like Option or Shift) to see alternate characters light up.
Type Special Characters with Option Key
Many symbols—©, ®, €, ≠, ±, curly quotes, em dashes—are typed using the Option (⌥) key plus another key. For example:
- ⌥ 2 → ™
- ⌥ R → ®
- ⌥ G → ©
- ⌥ - (hyphen) → — (em dash)
- ⌥ Shift - → – (en dash)
Keyboard Viewer shows these in real time when you hold Option—just look for the highlighted character.
Insert Emoji and Symbols Easily
Click the input menu in the menu bar and select Show Emoji & Symbols (or press Control Command Space ). The Character Viewer opens.
You can:
- Browse categories like Smileys, People, Flags, or Symbols
- Search by name (“thumbs up”, “euro”, “copyright”)
- Favorites: drag frequently used items to the Favorites bar at the top
- Double-click any character to insert it where your cursor is
Use Text Replacement for Quick Access
Set up shortcuts that auto-expand into symbols or emoji:
- Go to System Settings > Keyboard > Text Replacements
- Click , then enter a short phrase (eg, “:c”) in the Phrase field and the symbol (eg, “©”) in the Shortcut field
- Now typing “:c” space will replace it with ©
This works in most apps—including Notes, Mail, and Pages—but not all (some web forms ignore it).
Basically, Keyboard Viewer gives instant visual feedback, Character Viewer offers full access, and text replacements add speed. You don't need to memorize everything—just know where to look.
