To clear the command line history in Linux, you can use one of several methods depending on your shell (most commonly Bash). Here's how to do it safely and effectively.
Clear History for Current Session
If you want to erase the command history from the current terminal session, use the history command with the -c flag:
history -c
This removes all entries from the current session’s history list. However, this doesn’t immediately delete the saved history file on disk (~/.bash_history by default), so the old commands might reappear if not handled properly.
Delete the History File
To permanently remove the saved history, delete or empty the history file. You can do this by redirecting nothing into it:
> ~/.bash_history
Or use the rm command to remove the file entirely:
rm ~/.bash_history
The file will be recreated when you run a new shell session, but it will start fresh with no previous commands.
Prevent Future History Logging (Optional)
If you don't want commands recorded going forward, you can disable history temporarily:
set o history
This stops command recording in the current session. To re-enable it later, use:
set -o history
For a permanent solution, you can set HISTSIZE and HISTFILESIZE to 0 in your shell configuration file (~/.bashrc):
export HISTSIZE=0<br>export HISTFILESIZE=0
After saving, run source ~/.bashrc to apply the changes.
Basically just use history -c and clear the history file to fully wipe past commands. It’s simple but effective.
