Tesla's Engineering Exodus Comes Amid Shift From Core EV Mission

Emmanuel Lamacchia, a long-time Tesla program manager who played a key role in the development of the Model Y, announced on LinkedIn late Sunday that he is departing the Austin-based automaker after eight years. His exit follows by just hours a similar announcement from Siddhant Awasthi, another veteran of eight years who oversaw the Model 3 and Cybertruck programs. Neither executive disclosed specific reasons for their departures, though both referenced upcoming career transitions they chose not to elaborate on.
These exits mark the latest in a string of high-level departures as Elon Musk steers Tesla toward AI-centric ventures—such as robotaxis and humanoid robots—that remain unprofitable, while deprioritizing core revenue-generating operations like electric vehicle, battery, and charging infrastructure sales. Earlier this year, Musk dismissed Tesla’s head of manufacturing and North America and Europe sales leadership. In August, key figures including the director of the battery team, the former leader of the “Dojo” supercomputer initiative, and the vice president of North American sales and service also exited. Even the much-publicized Optimus robot project lost its leader in June.
“There are no new models on the horizon. It's all about cost reduction,” said a former Tesla executive who requested anonymity.
According to this insider, Musk’s strategic pivot is eroding Tesla’s appeal among automotive engineers. “Picture yourself as an engineer fresh out of school or someone with years in the auto industry walking into Tesla only to find zero new vehicle platforms in development—just efforts to cut costs,” the executive explained. “That’s not inspiring. They’re not going to attract top-tier talent anymore.”
Despite the leadership shake-up, investors showed little concern. On Monday, Tesla shares climbed 3.7% to $445.23 on the Nasdaq.
While third-quarter deliveries surged due to U.S. buyers rushing to take advantage of expiring federal tax credits before October, Tesla’s overall EV sales have dipped around 6% year-to-date. Although the company introduced lower-priced variants of its bestsellers—the Model Y and Model 3—it has failed to launch any entirely new models. With slowing EV demand in major markets like the U.S. and Europe, analysts expect auto sales to continue declining over the coming quarters.
Last week, Musk revealed plans for the two-door Cybercab, targeting a launch by Q2 2026. However, the vehicle is designed to operate solely as a self-driving car, without a steering wheel or conventional controls—a bold move given that Tesla still lags behind Alphabet’s Waymo in proving full autonomy capabilities.
Ross Gerber, a Tesla shareholder and vocal skeptic of Musk’s current direction, believes the company should instead introduce the Cybercab as a more traditional, affordable EV—essentially the anticipated "Model 2"—priced around $30,000.
“Car companies thrive when they offer customers new models, updated features, and refreshed designs—something familiar but improved,” said Gerber, CEO of Gerber Kawasaki, which manages approximately $4 billion in assets, including $80 million in Tesla stock. “Tesla isn’t acting like a car company anymore. They updated the Model Y and Model 3 and called it a day. That’s not innovation. That’s stagnation.”
Cybertruck sales, meanwhile, are already waning in its second full year on the market, dropping 38% year-over-year through the third quarter to just 16,097 units. Beyond its controversial design, the truck has faced multiple recalls, the most recent issued last month.
Although Musk confirmed Tesla plans to begin delivering its electric Semi in 2026, the commercial truck segment is inherently limited. Given the small size of the Class-8 truck market compared to consumer vehicles, the Semi will likely contribute only tens of thousands of additional annual sales at most.
Tesla currently boasts production capacity for at least 2 million vehicles per year across its factories in California, Texas, China, and Germany—well above projected 2024 sales of 1.5 to 1.6 million units. At last week’s shareholder meeting, where over 75% approved Musk’s controversial $1 trillion, decade-long performance-based stock package, the CEO hinted that excess factory capacity could be repurposed for robotics production.
“We're building a million-unit production line for Optimus in Fremont,” Musk stated. He added that the Austin facility—home to Cybertruck and Model Y assembly—will eventually house a “10 million unit per year” production line for the humanoid robot. Yet, like the robotaxi and Cybercab ambitions, these plans hinge on solving significant technical and affordability challenges that Tesla has yet to overcome.
The recent departures of Lamacchia and Awasthi further highlight an ongoing structural issue within Tesla: the absence of a robust executive bench and any clear succession plan for life after Musk. Aside from the CFO, Tesla’s C-suite lacks a president, COO, or any executives ranked above senior vice president.
For now, the board’s overwhelming support for Musk’s compensation plan signals an all-in bet on his continued leadership.
“I can’t envision a scenario where Tesla’s valuation doesn’t collapse if Elon Musk leaves,” said Gautam Mukunda, a professor at Yale School of Management. “We need entirely new language to describe the level of key person risk here. Standard frameworks don’t capture it—especially when dealing with someone whose own behavior, by admission, involves extreme risk-taking.”

How to collaboratively edit Mo Dao AI_Mo Dao multi-person real-time modification of AI prototype tutorial
Mar 04, 2026 pm 03:51 PM
If you invite team members to co-edit an AI prototype in Ink Knife but find that real-time collaboration is not possible or the modifications are not synchronized, it may be because the project permissions are set incorrectly or the collaboration feature is not enabled. The following is the specific operation path to realize multi-person real-time editing of Mo Dao's AI prototype: 1. Confirm that the project is in collaborative mode and enable AI prototype editing permissions. Mo Dao's default new project is "editable only by yourself". You need to manually switch to collaborative mode and ensure that the AI components support multiple people operating at the same time. The AI prototype only allows multiple people to modify the canvas, interaction logic and AI fields concurrently in a collaborative state. 1. Open the Ink Knife project and click the "Share" button in the upper right corner. 2. Select "Collaboration Mode" in the pop-up panel and change the permissions from "Only yourself" to "Editable". 3. Check
