1. Install and configure the Linux system

First we need to install the Linux system on the server. Common Linux operating systems include: Ubuntu, CentOS, Debian, etc. We need to understand our needs before choosing an operating system.

After installation, we need to perform basic configuration of the Linux operating system. For example, install necessary software, update security patches, modify IP addresses, etc.

2. Install and configure the Apache server

The Apache server is one of the most popular web server applications. It supports PHP and is open source and has high stability. We can install Apache through the command:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install apache2

After the installation is complete, we need to start the Apache service and perform basic configuration on it. For example, configure the firewall, modify the default port, prevent DDoS attacks, etc. Here we only talk about the most basic configuration, that is, changing the Apache root directory so that it can correctly process PHP files.

Open the Apache configuration file

sudo vim /etc/apache2/apache2.conf

Find the following content:

Options Indexes FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride None
Require all granted
Copy after login

is changed to

Options Indexes FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride All
Require all granted
Copy after login

Restart the Apache service after the modification is completed

sudo service apache2 restart

3. Install PHP

PHP can be installed directly through the apt-get command

sudo apt-get install php libapache2-mod-php

After the installation is complete we need to configure PHP to interact with the Apache server. We need to modify the Apache configuration file.

sudo vim /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/dir.conf

Put index.html in DirectoryIndex in front, as shown below

DirectoryIndex index.html index.cgi index.pl index.php index.xhtml index.htm
Copy after login

Restart the Apache service after the modification is completed

sudo service apache2 restart

4. Set up the database environment

Installing the MySQL database in the server and connecting PHP to the database can make it easier for us to store and manage data. We can install MySQL through the following command

sudo apt-get install mysql-server

After the installation is complete, we need to modify the MySQL configuration file to increase its security. For example, changing the password of the root user, restricting remote access, etc. Here we only describe how to create a new MySQL user

Enter the MySQL console

mysql -u root -p

Execute the following command to create a new database and user

CREATE DATABASE mydatabase;
CREATE USER 'myuser'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'mypassword';
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON mydatabase.* TO 'myuser'@'localhost';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;

After the modification is completed, we need to restart the MySQL service

sudo service mysql restart
