The new taskbar is one of the most controversial changes in Windows 11. The updated taskbar does not have extremely basic functions such as drag and drop, which is disliked by many users. The good news is that Microsoft is listening to feedback and it's fixing most of the taskbar issues in the Sun Valley 2 update. As you probably know (and hate it), Windows 11 doesn't allow you to drag and drop files to the taskbar to quickly open them in your favorite software. You also can't drag and drop apps to the taskbar to create shortcuts. As we exclusively reported last year, the company has been considering support for this feature internally for nearly six months. In Windows 11 Build 22557, Microsoft finally enabled drag-and-drop support for the taskbar, allowing users to drag and drop files between application windows. The Windows 11 taskbar now supports drag and drop Starting in Windows 11 Build 22557, files such as images or text can now be dragged and dropped between application windows. To get started, simply select and hold a file pinned to your desktop or File Explorer, then drag it toward one of the open applications in your taskbar by hovering over the icon. This brings their window to the foreground and the app can copy what you dragged. For example, you can drag and drop an image from your desktop into the Outlook attachments screen by hovering over the Outlook icon in the taskbar. Additionally, drag-and-drop support unlocks new customization opportunities. You can customize the taskbar by dragging apps from the Start menu's All Apps list and placing them on the taskbar to create quick shortcuts. Likewise, you can even drag and drop the desktop via the "Show Desktop" feature in the lower left corner of the taskbar. Microsoft is currently testing the feature in a preview version of the Dev Channel, an early build that allows users to test new features before rolling them out to customers around the world. Other Taskbar improvements As part of its efforts to improve the taskbar, Microsoft is also introducing support for a new privacy feature that will notify users when a window is shared. This is accomplished through a new visual indication that will appear on the app icon of the window being shared during Teams meetings. The taskbar's new functionality is especially useful when there are multiple applications running or you have multiple monitors. You may have noticed that Microsoft released a major update to the stable version of Windows 11 in February 2022, which supports some taskbar features and more. Microsoft may be pushing drag-and-drop support and other changes to Windows 11 version 21H2 via an upcoming cumulative update.
