Microsoft released Windows 11 Build 22538 for Insiders in the Dev Channel. The new update adds voice access improvements as well as other improvements and fixes.

Today Microsoft released Windows 11 Build 22538.1010 to the Dev channel to test the service pipeline. This means that the update does not contain anything new, but only increases your build number. If you haven't caught up with Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22518 yet, here's what's included in it.

Voice Access Update

We first introduced Voice Access in Build 22518. Voice Access is a new experience in controlling your PC using just your voice. In today's release, we're making some Voice Access updates available for Windows Insiders to try.

Use the touch keyboard for voice access

You can use the touch keyboard with voice access:

  • Spell words such as names and email addresses.
  • Enter numbers, such as phone numbers and addresses.
  • Enter punctuation and symbols.
  • Enter emoticons.

When using the touch keyboard, you can only use the following voice access commands:

Changes and Improvements

  • An updated entry point for the widget with weather on the taskbar first introduced in Build 22518 should now be available Available to all Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel.
  • In ALT TAB, Task View, and Snap Assist, the focus rectangle showing the selection will now use the accent color you selected on your PC.

  • Our updated IME and touch keyboard designs will now appear on the lock screen and where you enter account information such as usernames and passwords. This change is currently rolling out to a subset of Windows Insiders, and we will expand over time based on feedback.

  • We are starting to roll out speech input, with speech packs available for download from the Microsoft Store that enable device-based speech recognition for better transcription performance.
  • We are trying to improve the discoverability of certain input features in various areas of the operating system.
  • If necessary, you can directly access ncpa.cpl again.
  • We added HTTPS boot for Hyper-V Generation 2 VMs. This feature is enabled by default.
  • For PCs that support it, display calibration can now be done directly under Settings >Display >HDR, rather than having to open a separate Settings page.

Fixed

[General]

  • Press the hardware button to increase/decrease the volume It should no longer cause explorer.exe to crash for some Insiders.
  • We believe that the issue that caused some Insiders to see text in Settings and elsewhere in the previous build should no longer reappear in this build.
  • Fixed an issue that caused Narrator to crash in text boxes when using scan mode.
  • Mitigates an issue on some PCs where, after resuming from sleep or hibernation, video playback resumes immediately but audio may take up to 10 seconds to start playing.

[File Manager]

  • Folders named "Advanced" should no longer accidentally open Advanced Sharing in Settings Settings" page.

[Search]

  • We've done some work to resolve an issue where searching using "Start from" or clicking " When typing after the "Search" icon in the taskbar, the search will not actually start because no text has been entered. If you are still experiencing this issue after upgrading, please submit new feedback in the Feedback Center under Desktop Environment > Search.

[Taskbar]

  • Long format taskbar date and time should no longer break on secondary monitors.

[Settings]

  • There should no longer be a random blank entry under Bluetooth and Devices.
  • Fixed an issue where Narrator read the Continue Update button as "Check for Updates" in the Windows Update page.
  • Settings should no longer crash when going to System >Display >HDR.
  • Fixed an issue believed to be the root cause of a crash in Settings when using the Clear Location History option.
  • Fixed an issue that caused some Insiders' settings to crash when viewing Wi-Fi network properties.
  • For those with dual network cards, the "Private" and "Public" controls in the network properties should no longer flash.
  • If you search for "network reset," the settings page to do this will now appear in the search results.
  • When viewing the list of available Wi-Fi networks in Quick Settings, the signal strength indicator should now reflect the correct signal strength instead of showing full strength at all.

  • Removed the "Try your settings" box from Personalization > Text Input > Custom Themes because it didn't work.

  • Add missing inverted interrobang (?) to the general punctuation part of WIN periods.

[Open window]

  • For those using custom mode in Settings > Personalization > Colors For users, the background of ALT Tab, Task View, and Snap Assist should now follow the default Windows mode (light or dark) instead of the default application mode.
  • When using the Arabic or Hebrew display languages, dragging and dropping windows in Task View should now drag in the correct direction again.
  • Explorer.exe should now not crash when closing a snapshot group containing 3 or 4 applications.

[Widgets]

  • We fixed an issue that would cause widget buttons to disappear from the taskbar if you changed the taskbar alignment .
  • When multiple monitors are connected to your PC, the widget content on the taskbar should not get out of sync between monitors.

[Voice Access]

  • Fixed an issue where recently removed microphones were displayed as the selected microphone.
  • Resolved an issue to ensure microphone status changes are announced to screen reader users.
  • Fixed an issue that ensured the microphone name was read out for screen reader users on the microphone selection page when setting up voice access for the first time.
  • Fixed an issue ensuring that the microphone label communicates the current microphone status to screen reader users.
  • Fixed an issue where duplicate number labels were displayed on the Microsoft Edge homepage using the Show Numbers command.
  • Fixed an issue where the command "lowercase previous character" was not working as expected.
  • Fixed an issue where Voice Access would give an error message saying "Voice Access wakes up" even when no microphone is connected.
  • Fixed an issue where the "Switch to Edge" command did not prompt for input when two Microsoft Edge windows were open and one was maximized.
  • Fixed an issue where the command "Go to Font" was not giving the expected results in Microsoft Word.
  • Fixed an issue where the "Wake for Voice Access" command did not activate the Voice Access microphone when you spoke continuously without any pauses.
  • Fixed an issue where dictation was not working properly on desktop and File Explorer.
  • Fixed an issue where the command "show numbers" was not displaying number labels on the focused window.

[Task Manager]

  • Fixed an issue affecting the reliability of Task Manager.
  • Updated the App History tab column name in Task Manager from "Tile Updates" to "Notifications".

Note: Some of the fixes mentioned here in Insider Preview builds from the active development branch may make their way into the released version of Windows 11 that will be generally available on October 5, 2021 The service is being updated.

Known issues

[Taskbar]

  • Taskbar when switching input methods Sometimes it flickers.

[Search]

  • The search panel may not open after clicking the search icon on the taskbar. If this happens, restart the Windows Explorer process and open the search panel again.

[Enter]

  • At the UAC prompt, the IME candidate window is not displayed.

[Widget]

  • When the taskbar is aligned to the left, information such as temperature will not be displayed. This will be fixed in a future update.

Windows 11 Insiders in the Dev Channel can install Windows 11 Build 22538.1010 by checking for updates in Settings.
