Resident Evil: Village marked the series’ Mac debut in 2022, despite being the eighth installment. Since then, Capcom has steadily released Resident Evil 4, 7, and 2 on macOS. The order of release doesn’t really matter, as each game features a standalone storyline—good news, since the newest Mac release is Resident Evil 3, originally launched on PC in 2020 as a reimagining of the 1999 classic.
In this installment, you take on the role of Jill Valentine, a special operations agent dispatched to Racoon City in the American Midwest to investigate the spread of the so-called “zombie virus” first seen in Resident Evil 2. Jill and her team suspect Umbrella, a sinister pharmaceutical giant, of creating a biological weapon known as the T-Virus—believed to be the root cause of the outbreak. While most entries in the series have you mowing down hordes of slow, mindless zombies, Resident Evil 3 introduces a terrifying new threat: Nemesis, a highly intelligent super-zombie secretly engineered by Umbrella.

Nemesis shifts the dynamic dramatically, transforming Jill from predator to prey. Rather than dominating every encounter, you’re often forced into survival mode—running, hiding, and evading as Nemesis relentlessly stalks you through the crumbling city. This change of pace adds tension and excitement, offering a refreshing break from the usual run-and-gun formula.
The game’s frequent cut-scenes can occasionally disrupt the momentum, but overall, Resident Evil 3 serves as a solid entry point for Mac gamers unfamiliar with the series. The combat, while intense, is slightly less overwhelming than in other installments. Capcom recommends using a gamepad, but playing with a mouse and keyboard works well too—even for longtime fans of traditional PC controls.

It’s also a great fit for owners of older or less powerful Macs. Thanks to its 2020 origins, the game doesn’t demand cutting-edge hardware to run smoothly. According to the Mac App Store, it supports Macs with M1 chips or newer, and requires macOS 13.0 or later—though it’s not compatible with Intel-based Macs.
We tested the game on an M2 Pro MacBook Pro, and performance was consistently smooth, even during chaotic scenes packed with zombies. (It’s a pity there’s no built-in frame rate counter to monitor performance precisely.) The game includes multiple graphics presets, letting you balance visual fidelity and performance based on your machine’s capabilities. Plus, a free demo is available—ideal for checking compatibility and performance before purchasing.

One downside—common among Mac-exclusive titles—is that the Mac version is only available through the Mac App Store. So if you already own the game on Steam or another platform, you’ll need to purchase it again for Mac. However, there’s a silver lining: the Mac version is also compatible with iPhone 15 and later models, as well as iPads equipped with A17 or M-series chips. Buying once grants access across your Apple devices.
Should You Buy Resident Evil 3?
If you’re well-versed in the Resident Evil series, the core shooting mechanics might feel familiar. Yet the inclusion of Nemesis adds a thrilling layer of suspense and unpredictability. Combined with accessible system requirements and a free demo, Resident Evil 3 is a solid, budget-friendly pick for newcomers to the franchise. Now, if only Capcom would bring Monster Hunter and Dragon’s Dogma to Mac…
