EA's Skate Doesn't Yet Have A Release Date, But It Does Have Microtransactions
Mar 13, 2025 pm 04:24 PMEA's upcoming Skate reboot, currently in closed alpha, introduces microtransactions before its official release. This revamped skateboarding MMO, playable on massive servers with an open-world environment, is free-to-play. However, players can purchase cosmetic items using San Van Bucks, a virtual currency bought with real money.
San Van Bucks and Cosmetic Customization: San Van Bucks allow players to customize their in-game characters with clothes, boards, and other cosmetic items. EA is using the alpha to gather feedback on this system, aiming for a positive purchasing experience. Progress may be reset during the alpha and early access, but San Van Bucks purchases will be fully refunded as virtual currency, usable upon early access launch (provided the same EA account is used).
Concerns about Early Microtransactions: Introducing microtransactions this early is a questionable decision. Many gamers prefer one-time purchases, and Skate's microtransactions, while purely cosmetic, perpetuate a trend often criticized as anti-consumer. With competitors like Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 4 on the horizon, this early implementation could negatively impact player perception. Although Skate is free-to-play, minimizing the risk of pay-to-win scenarios, the move still feels premature and potentially damaging to the game's reception. This is especially relevant given that EA's revenue heavily relies on microtransactions (73% in Q4 2023, according to Geoff Keighley). While not a fatal flaw, it's a significant misstep.
