The afterlife finally got some attention in The Sims 4 with the introduction of the Life and Death expansion. With a lot of opportunities to explore, this update added more interactive options once a sim passes on. Previously, the same had been done with other occult-type sims like vampires, spellcasters, and werewolves. Additionally, occult sims can also hold their powers after they die.
Like every other occult, Ghost Sims can choose their powers and affect other’s lives. With these powers, you can choose to be a sinister or helpful ghost after death with the Sim Power Tree.
After stepping into the afterlife, Ghost Sims will be able to fortify their presence and interaction through Ghost Mastery perks. You can find the Ghost Mastery power tree under the Simology Panel. Then click on the book icon under the Ghost Mastery tab to get a full view of your available ghost abilities.
The Ghost Mastery power tree has five tiers and six branches that range from evil to good influences. The two leftmost rows of powers are evil abilities that your Ghost Sim can perform. In contrast, the two rightmost rows are good abilities that improve everyone’s lives. The two rows at the center are neutral abilities that upgrade Ghost Sim’s endurance and powers.
You can equip both evil and good abilities on the same Ghost Sim. Just make sure you're picking the right ability before using them.
Ghost Sims who have been part of the occult like werewolves, spellcasters, and vampires can keep those powers as well. This allows you to master both Ghost Sim powers and occult abilities in The Sims 4: Life and Death.
However, like every other occult, you’ll start your Ghost Sim journey from the base level. There are five tiers to cover in the Ghost Mastery power tree:
As you progress through each tier, your Sim will gain experience points. Once you’ve reached the topmost level, you’ll be able to use mastery skills like Otherworldly Curse and Benevolent Blessing.
Ghost Sims can strengthen themselves strategically through a dedicated perk tree called Ghost Mastery. This works similarly to previous mastery trees for celebrities, werewolves, vampires, and other extras. Ghost Sim Mastery Abilities are divided into five tiers and each of them unlocks various abilities.
Every tier has evil, good, and neutral abilities to shape your Ghost Sim and how they will impact your game. As you make your way up the mastery ladder, you’ll get the following abilities.

To level up your Ghost Powers, simply do actions that add experience to Ghost Mastery. Possessing objects, scaring sims and other ghostly actions will yield you mastery progress. By reaching each progress milestone you’re rewarded with experience points. You can use these experience points to unlock abilities in the Ghost Mastery perk tree.
You can allocate points to perks in Ghost Mastery, and confirm. So choose perks wisely, as you won't be able to choose again.
Using newly unlocked abilities also gives you experience progression. The more powerful your abilities, the more experience points you will get. Beware, using them also drains your stamina, so keep that in check. It is recommended to acquire Grim’s Ride-or-Die ability to stay alive in spectral form and continue powering your Ghost Sim.
Unlock the Endurance perk in Ghost Mastery menu to reduce the rate of stamina usage.
You can check your Ghost Mastery progression in the Simology tab. To get a more detailed view, use the book icon under the Ghost Mastery menu. This will also give you a thorough look at all the abilities and their effects.
Right off the bat, you don’t have many special abilities that you can use with your Ghost Sim. Level up and learn skills under the Ghost Mastery tab to unlock various abilities.
To use ghost abilities simply click on a Sim or a location to open the interaction pie menu. Under it, you’ll find a section for Ghost Mastery. Under this menu, you’ll get choices between Chaos, Scare, Comfort, and Helpful Abilities, if you have any ability unlocked. You can also use interactions with a Ghost icon to use your natural ghost powers.
Sometimes you can get a ghost experience from certain normal actions. For instance, fighting with a Sim gives you experience at times.
Usage of ghost abilities also drains your Ghost Sim stamina. You can view your stamina bar under the Simology tab with a Circular indicator. Too much usage of ghost abilities will leave your Sim looking translucent. Thus requiring you to rest a bit before using Ghost Mastery abilities again.
Once your ghost sim is fully rested, your Ghost Sim will appear vibrant like every other ghost in its spectral form. When you’re in this form, feel free to use your abilities to scare, assist, possess objects, and perform other phantom interactions.
