Combat in the Dragon Quest 3 Remake seems extremely simple at first, and at its core, it is simple. But that simple foundation allows it to expand the further into the game you get, until eventually you're juggling multiple different strategies throughout a fight in order to come out on top.
One of the combat mechanics that's going to remain important throughout is MP. MP is used to cast Spells and Abilities, and running out of it means your character is likely about to become much less valuable to the party. Luckily, there are a few ways to restore MP when you really need it.
The primary way you're going to be restoring MP is through items. These items range from fairly common to exceedingly rare, and the most rare of them is not meant to be used as a way to restore MP; it just does so as a byproduct.
Magic Water is the entry-level MP restoration item, and you're going to find more than a few of it throughout your playthrough. But, its value decreases the higher the level your characters get. 15 MP seems good in the early going, but once your characters have more than 100 MP maximum, 15 is hardly going to make a dent.
You're primarily going to be finding Magic Water by wandering around the open world and exploring dungeons, but some mid and late-game shops will sell them, too (though they aren't cheap).
Sage's Elixir is a much more useful MP restoration item, and because it's more useful, it's also going to be a little rarer. But, 80 MP is a big difference over 15, and is going to let you cast a multitude more Spells or Abilities than you would, otherwise. If you think you're going to be in combat for quite a while longer, using a Sage's Elixir might be a necessity.
Just like Magic Water, you're mostly going to find Sage's Elixir out and about on your adventures in pots, chests, and bags.
The best of the MP restoration items is, indisputably, the Elfin Elixir. Restoring an entire MP bar is the biggest difference that can be made, and the Elfin Elixir can turn a fight that would have been hopeless into a winnable encounter.
The Elfin Elixir is exceptionally rare, and you aren't going to be getting many of them. Use them with care, and ensure that using them is going to make a difference.
The Prayer Ring is going to have fluctuating value for different people because of the random chance it has to break. You might get one use out of a Prayer Ring, or you might get quite a few. In our experience, we've gotten at least three uses out of each Prayer Ring we've used, but that is not going to be the case across the board.
The Prayer Ring restores around 20 MP on use, sometimes a little bit more. It's going to have more value than Magic Water because it can be used more than once, but they're a little bit harder to come by, as well.
The Yggdrasil Leaf should absolutely not be used simply as a way to restore a character's MP. It is one of the rarest consumable items to find in the game, and can rescue a fight by guaranteeing a revive on a party member, and a full heal to boot.
However, the fact that it does fully restore MP is a nice side effect.
While using a Spell to restore MP might seem counter-intuitive, there is one spell that does the trick: Drain Magic. Drain Magic takes MP from the monster you're targeting and gives that MP to you. It's a spell learnable by both Sages and Mages once they reach level 15.
While it can be a drawback to not deal damage for a turn with the character, it can be a way to keep that character relevant in fights going forward, if the rest of the party can handle the turn on their own.
