Side quests are always some of the best parts of Bioware games, and that's no different in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. However, the first five hours or so of the game are linear, funnelling you through areas to complete story quests.
Side quests do start appearing eventually. Since you will want to rid the world of blight, help as many people as you can, and romance your favourite companions as soon as possible, you'll want to add as many side quests to your journal as you can. However, they're not always easy to find - you'll have to keep your eyes peeled if you want to get them all.
First of all, you need to play the main quest line until the Lighthouse opens up a little, with each of your companions hanging out in their own rooms. That will take five or so hours of playing.
Then, you'll start being able to begin side quests both from NPCs in all the regularly visited locations and your companions.
Side quests are indicated with orange exclamation marks. On the world map, they're easy to spot. Once you're exploring, though, you need to get really close to the location of the side quest for it to appear on-screen. For example, when heading to a side quest in a companion's room in the Lighthouse, you need to get close to their door for the orange exclamation mark to appear.
To unlock more side quests, you simply need to Progress the story and unlock more areas for exploration. You'll then find more each time you travel to a location.
There are also side conversations you can have with companions, which improve relationships and make new side quests available.
These conversations will be indicated by orange speech bubbles with an exclamation mark inside. These will be shown next to an icon of the companion's face on the world map. You interact with them in the same way as standard side quests.
