Styling mat-select's Panel: Resolving the Customization Challenge

Problem:
Within mat-select's component hierarchy, the panelClass attribute is used to define which styles should be applied to the panel. However, applying custom styles to the panel using this method seems to be ineffective, leaving developers puzzled.

Addressing the Issue:

For Angular 9 and Above:

  • CSS: .mat-select-panel {...} can be used to style the panel.

For Angular 4.4.5 and Below:

1. Utilizing ::ng-deep (DEPRECATED):

  • CSS: ::ng-deep .mat-select-content {...} will pierce through the component encapsulation to enforce styles on the select list content.

2. Leveraging ViewEncapsulation:

  • TypeScript: Enabling ViewEncapsulation.None in the component's metadata will disable encapsulation, allowing global CSS styles to be applied directly.

3. Overriding Styles in style.css:

  • style.css: Use !important to override default styles. E.g., .mat-select-content {... !important}.

4. Inline Styling:

  • HTML: Apply styles inline within the elements. E.g., .

Example in Typescript (Method 2):

<code class="typescript">import { ViewEncapsulation } from '@angular/core';

@Component({
  encapsulation: ViewEncapsulation.None,
})</code>
Copy after login

Example in style.css (Method 3):

<code class="css">.mat-select-content {
  width: 2000px !important;
  background-color: red !important;
  font-size: 10px !important;
}</code>
Copy after login

By utilizing these methods, developers can effectively style mat-select panels, addressing the customization challenges encountered in Angular Material.
