Worldcoin Rebrands to 'World Network” — Unveils New Biometric Scanning Device, Alternative Identity Verification Methods and 'Deepfake” Solver

Digital identity project Worldcoin, co-founded by Sam Altman and backed by Andreessen Horowitz, has announced several major updates, including a rebranding effort and the launch of World Chain, a Layer 2 blockchain.

The company revealed the updates during an Oct. 17 keynote speech, which also touched on the company's recent legal troubles and allegations of insider trading.

Worldcoin is now simply ‘World’

Worldcoin has officially changed its name to “World Network” — or simply “World.” The company's digital identity solution, World ID, will continue to be offered through the World app.

According to World co-founder Sam Altman, the new branding better reflects the company's expanding goals and community, which now includes 15 million users across 160 countries.

“We started out making a chain of people who are alive. Now, we're building a network of people who are alive,” said Altman.

World Chain launches with Nvidia hardware

The launch of World Chain, a Layer 2 blockchain secured by Ethereum, marks a significant step in World's efforts to create a “humans-only” network.

The blockchain, which is supported by platforms including Optimism, Alchemy, Uniswap, Safe, Dune, and Etherscan, aims to drive forward World's ambitious goals of offering users lower gas fees and the chance to be involved in future governance decisions.

“We built World Chain on the OP Stack because it aligns with our vision for a humans-only network,” said World Chain lead Chris Tramountanas.

“The community has welcomed us with open arms, and together we're making L2 the place to be for great apps and users.”

A new version of the Orb biometric scanning device, which is now five times more powerful thanks to Nvidia hardware, was also announced by World. The updated device will soon be available in self-service kiosks in select markets.

In addition, World is introducing alternative methods for identity verification. Users with NFC-enabled passports will now be able to confirm their identity through the World app, expanding beyond the Orb hardware.

Finally, World is introducing a new feature called Deep Face, which the company claims to have “solved deepfakes.” The service can be integrated into apps like FaceTime, WhatsApp, and Zoom to detect whether videos featuring verified individuals are real or AI-generated.
