Its core offering is its World ID, which the company describes as a "digital passport" to prove that its holder is a real human and tell the difference with AI chatbots online.

Cryptocurrency project Worldcoin, founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, is now called World Network and is aiming to scan every human's iris with its "orb" devices.

Its main product is the World ID, which the company calls a "digital passport" to prove that its holder is a real human and not, for example, an AI chatbot online.

World Network, which has faced scrutiny over its data collection, showed off a new version of its orb iris-scanning device at an event in San Francisco on Thursday, which it said has 5G connectivity and better privacy and security features.

It also announced several new initiatives to make the orb more accessible, including dedicated retail locations and a partnership with Latin American delivery service Rappi to bring orbs to people.

To obtain a World ID, a customer signs up to perform an in-person iris scan using World Network's "orb," a silver ball roughly the size of a bowling ball.

The orb's iris scan generates a World ID once it confirms the person is a real human. Those who sign up in specific countries receive a cryptocurrency token called WLD as an incentive.

Tools for Humanity, a San Francisco and Erlangen, Germany-based company, is behind World Network. According to the business, over 6.9 million people have signed up to have their irises scanned since the project's launch in July 2023.

Privacy advocates have criticized the project for how it collects, stores, and uses personal data.

Earlier this year, Spain and Portugal briefly banned the technology, while Argentina and the United Kingdom said they would investigate World Network.
