Pocket EVO: AYANEO re-releases powerful Android gaming handheld with 165 Hz AMOLED display

AYANEO has now delivered upon its promise of a Pocket EVO 'new release'. To recap, the company initially teased that a new Pocket EVO was on its way, albeit without providing any specifics in this regard. However, that does not appear to be what AYANEO has actually done.

Instead, it has removed all references to the original Pocket EVO's release from the device's Indiegogo campaign, much to the bemusement of some early backers. Consequently, it seems that AYANEO has no intentions of releasing the original version of the Pocket EVO, which combined the following hardware:

  • 7-inch, 1080p, 120 Hz AMOLED display
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 chipset
  • 8,600 mAh battery

As far as we can tell, the only change between that hardware and the 'new' Pocket EVO is a 165 Hz display. With that being said, the mention of 60 Hz, 120 Hz, 144 Hz and 165 Hz refresh rate modes implies that AYANEO has managed to overclock the panel beyond its previous 120 Hz limit. To that end, the Pocket EVO still starts at $389 with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage.

Alternatively, the gaming handheld can be configured with up to 24 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage for $639. Currently, AYANEO hopes to start shipping Pocket EVO units in November 2024. In the meantime, the AYN Odin2 (curr. $449 on Amazon) remains freely orderable globally with broadly the same performance as the Pocket EVO in most games, emulated or otherwise.
