Hamburgers and Solana memecoins collided on Aug. 21 as hackers compromised McDonald’s Instagram page, using the global fast-food chain’s social media to promote Solana-based GRIMACE.

McDonald's marketing director Guillaume Huin also posted about the memecoin on his X page.

Hackers pitched GRIMACE as “a McDonald’s experiment on Solana,” and early investors hoping to catch the next moonshot bought in. According to data from pump.fun, the memecoin quickly reached a valuation of $20 million. However, a swift rug pull crashed GRIMACE to a market cap of less than $1 million shortly after.

A message appeared thanking buyers for $700,000 worth of Solana, suggesting that the hackers siphoned less than 4% of the token's total value. Several wallets invested 6.2 SOL in GRIMACE two minutes before it launched, at which point the McDonald's post went live. The addresses went on to collect nearly half a million dollars in Solana's native currency 28 minutes later.

The posts were deleted before they could be screenshotted by crypto.news observers.

The culprits deleted all of McDonald's posts promoting Solana's memecoin GRIMACE, including Huin's tweets on X. At press time, neither Huin nor McDonald had responded to commentary requests from crypto.news or acknowledged the incident.

Pump.fun is an easily accessible memecoin launchpad on Solana. The protocol has been used by developers to launch 1.8 million meme-inspired tokens. Most of the tokens crashed, and Pump.fun has generated over $340 million in fees since launching in January.

Tron (TRX) and its SunPump (SUN) platform were launched to compete with Solana and Pump.fun for a share of the booming memecoin issuance market. The TRX-based meme ecosystem generated more revenue than Ethereum in 24 hours.
