AI-cloned voices have become so convincingly real that millions have been lost to fraud. Earlier this year, thieves stole $25 million from a finance worker at a Hong Kong multinational by using a deepfake video call that used deepfake voices of the CFO and other staff members. The AI breaks up voice samples into four-second clips for analysis, utilizing the unique audio characteristics of various deepfake algorithms and additional audio characteristics of real voices to identify fakes. This enables Pulse Inspect to detect fakes 90% of the time when faced with cloned voices from never-before-encountered deepfake tools and 99% of the time when faced with voices from previously-seen tools.

A recent NPR test of Pulse Inspect found that the software did not correctly categorize real versus fake voices in 3 out of 84 tested samples.
