HoverAir’s palm-sized X1 Pro and X1 Pro Max selfie drones revealed before DJI Neo launch

Since its launch last year, the HoverAir X1 from Zero Zero Robotics has received great reviews for its tiny, foldable form-factor and outstanding ease-of-use. Now, the company has revealed details of its two upcoming selfie drones – the X1 Pro and X1 Pro Max – that improve upon the original X1 in a number of ways.

Starting with flying capabilities, the drones now feature OmniTerrain (an upgraded Visual Inertial Odometry system), which enables them to fly over water, snow and cliffs. There is also active collision detection on the rear and sides, to fly safely in tight spaces. The speed in auto-follow mode is 42 km/h (with a peak speed of 60 km/h) and max flight time is 16 minutes – up by almost 5 minutes from the X1. The drones can withstand level 5 winds (i.e. 10.7 m/s) and fly at altitudes of up to 5,500 m (18,000 ft).

The cameras also see significant upgrades. The X1 Pro uses a 17 mm equivalent lens, and shoots in 4K/60fps or 1080p/120fps, thanks to its ½” CMOS sensor. The X1 Pro Max takes things a step further, shooting at 8K/30fps, 4K/120fps, or 4K/60fps with 10-bit HDR. The lens is a wide 16 mm equivalent, and the sensor is larger, at 1/1.3”. For reference, the original X1 shoots in 2.7K/30fps or 1920x1080 (FHD)/60fps, and uses a 19 mm lens.

That means, at least in the camera department, HoverAir’s two new drones will out-spec the upcoming DJI Neo, whose images and details have recently leaked, and which occupies the same ultra-compact category as these two.

To accommodate these enhancements, both drones do see a slight increase in size and weight: unfolded, they measure 173 x 149 x 39 mm (6.8 x 5.9 x 1.5 inches), with a weight of 192 g (6.77 ounces). The design is also visibly upgraded, sporting slightly more rounded corners. The interface (requiring no remote or mobile app) has changed from the two buttons and six mode indicator LEDs to a single button coupled with an LCD screen.

The prices and launch date have not been disclosed yet, but with the DJI Neo rumoured to launch any day now, the release of these two promising drones should not be too far away either. At any rate, you can get the still rather new HoverAir X1 on Amazon for a discounted price (at the time of writing) of $349.
