Scammers and other bad actors prey on Hamster Kombat players in an effort to cash in on the game's massive popularity.

Scammers are targeting users of the popular mobile game Hamster Kombat with phishing attacks, using fake airdrops to steal login credentials and crypto wallet information, cybersecurity firm Kaspersky has warned.

According to Olga Svistunova, a security expert at Kaspersky, the firm recently detected phishing attempts targeting Hamster Kombat players.

“Our team has exposed a series of fraudulent schemes targeting users of the Hamster Kombat. In one scheme, scammers lure victims with promises of converting in-game coins to rubles through phishing links that require Telegram login credentials,” Svistunova told Cointelegraph.

The expert explained that once the attackers obtain the users' credentials, they can carry out further attacks.

“Once credentials are entered, attackers gain access to personal accounts, enabling them to steal data, blackmail, and send fraudulent messages. This scheme targets victims in Russia but fraudsters from other countries might also start luring victims within the same scenario,” Svistunova added.

With over 239 million users after just 81 days, Hamster Kombat has become one of the most popular mobile games. The clicker game is adding four to five million new users daily, making it one of the world's fastest-growing digital services, according to Telegram founder Pavel Durov.

Scammers have also been known to spread false information about upcoming airdrops in an attempt to steal cryptocurrency.

Kaspersky: Fake Hamster Kombat airdrops aim to steal crypto wallet credentials

According to Svistunova, the fraudulent Hamster Kombat airdrops aim to obtain users' crypto wallet credentials.

“Scammers exploit the allure of free cryptocurrency by offering fake airdrops of Hamster cryptocurrency, aiming to steal crypto wallet information. Additionally, fraudsters also set up phishing sites claiming to sell Hamster cryptocurrency at a discount, deceiving users into providing access to their crypto wallets,” the expert explained.

Following its pre-market listing on Bybit on July 8, the Hamster Kombat (HMSTR) coin has seen a surge in interest.

The cybersecurity firm also highlighted that fraudsters are stealing people's Bitcoin through "fraudulent commission payments" and setting up fake websites that claim to offer users free coins.
