Charles Hoskinson Teases “Creative Name” for Cardano’s Upcoming Hard Fork

Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson has teased a “creative name” for the upcoming hard fork, revealing it to be Tasselled Wobbegong.

In a post on social media platform X, Hoskinson shared his choice of name, which aligns with the Cardano community's practice of naming hard forks. He shared a fun fact about the Tasselled Wobbegong, a rare species of shark found in Indonesia's eastern waters. This shark is known for its flat shape and ability to sit motionless on the sea floor, evading detection by potential prey. The master of disguise then gobbles up any unsuspecting victim that swims close.

Highlighting the significance of creative names in blockchain, Hoskinson explained that his decision was driven by the community's efforts to create different names for hard forks, and he felt that his fit the bill.

A hard fork is a blockchain protocol that is not backward-compatible. For example, Bitcoin experienced a major split in its protocol in 2017, leading to the creation of Bitcoin Cash through a hard fork. This event marked a significant moment in the broader crypto ecosystem.

In the realm of Cardano, the hard fork combinator tool has been utilized to merge different protocols following a hard fork event. In 2020, Cardano launched the proof-of-stake blockchain with the "Shelley" hard fork. Despite introducing a new chain, it retained blocks from the old Byron network, thanks to the combinator tool, which ensured no radical modification occurred after the hard fork.

Furthermore, Cardano executed another hard fork in 2021, known as "Mary," which introduced decentralized finance (DeFi) functionality to the blockchain. This was followed by the Alonzo hard fork, which enabled the development of smart contracts on the network.

While these naming systems may not have garnered much attention in the past, Hoskinson's recent teasing seems to be building anticipation within the community for the upcoming hard fork, named Chang. This aligns with Cardano's goal of introducing decentralized on-chain governance to the blockchain.

The Chang hard fork will empower Cardano holders to participate in voting on various issues, either directly or through delegate representatives. In preparation for the anticipated Chang hard fork, exchanges and decentralized applications will need to upgrade to Node 9.0, which was released last month by Cardano's blockchain development team.
