Winners of breast cancer awareness challenge coin design announced

Designs for the 2024 Pink Patch Project Breast Cancer Challenge Coin were announced Monday morning.

First place: The Moyer Family of Grass Valley

Second place: Miranda Bacon of Grass Valley

“We had a total of 37 designs submitted, all of which were uniquely different, making it challenging for our seven agencies to pick just one design,” explained Trina Woodward, Pink Patch Project Coordinator for the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office.

Tina West, Pink Patch Project Coordinator for Grass Valley Police Department concurred, adding, “Because we liked so many designs, we collectively agreed to vote for two winners. The Moyer family’s design received the most votes and will be the front of the coin and Miranda’s received the second most votes and will be the back of the coin.”

Both coin designs will now be used to create the 2024 Pink Patch Project Breast Cancer Challenge Coin for Nevada County.

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the importance of early detection and prevention, every October participating law enforcement and fire agencies sell Pink Patch Project Breast Cancer Challenge Coins for $20 each with 100 percent of proceeds benefiting local breast cancer research and services at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation in Grass Valley, California and Tahoe Forest Health System Foundation in Truckee, California. Agency-worn Pink Patches and merchandise are also sold annually to benefit both foundations.

Moyer and Bacon will receive additional recognition and will be formally awarded during the campaign period, which kicks off in October. However, breast cancer awareness fighters, survivors and supporters will have an early opportunity to purchase select Pink Patch Project patches and coins at the Nevada County Fair, Aug. 7 – 11. The 2024 coin is expected to be released on Oct. 1.

Agencies that make the Pink Patch Project possible include the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, Grass Valley Police Department, Truckee Police Department, Nevada City Police Department, Grass Valley Fire Department, Nevada County Consolidated Fire District, and Nevada County Probation. All seven agencies will fundraise and collectively sell coins, pink patches, and other merchandise this October to benefit breast cancer prevention.

Designs underwent slight modification for print and overall aesthetics.
