Cape Town-based Web3 start-up Momint has announced plans for global expansion following the successful acquisition of a $50,000 (R900,000) grant from the Dfinity Foundation.

The Swiss non-profit organization is dedicated to research and development (R&D) within the blockchain technology sector. The grant was secured through the Internet Computer Protocol (ICP) Hub of Southern Africa, also known as Mzansi Web3 (MW3), which is funded by Dfinity.

Momint intends to utilize the grant to integrate the ICP blockchain into its business operations. This strategic integration aims to strengthen the start-up’s global expansion efforts, positioning it to gain, retain, and expand its market share in the highly competitive international digital economy.

The Dfinity Foundation, headquartered in Zurich, is a non-profit organization with a global network of experts, including cryptographers, computer scientists, and specialists in distributed computing. The foundation claims to have the largest R&D operations in the blockchain industry, with many employees previously affiliated with IBM Research and Google. These employees have collectively published over 1,600 papers and registered more than 250 patents.

Shaheer Karrim, co-founder and CEO of MW3, emphasized the immense innovation and opportunities presented by ICP in relation to the South African start-up scene. He highlighted that Momint’s use of the blockchain protocol to tokenize real-world assets serves as a compelling case study.

He noted that the secure consensus mechanism and low gas fees of ICP have enabled fast, affordable blockchain transactions for Momint. This has resulted in a significant increase in the rate at which the company can sell tokenized solar certificates, ultimately advancing efforts to democratize access to solar investments in South Africa.

Additionally, the ICP blockchain protocol provides a direct stream of data from smart meters on all solar panels, creating an incorruptible record of energy generation and asset degradation over time.
