Kano Govt Orders Police to Evict Deposed Emir Ado Bayero from Nassarawa Mini Palace

The Kano State Government has directed the police to remove the 15th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero from the Nassarawa mini palace.

A Federal High Court sitting in Kano State, on Thursday, June 20, nullified the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano.

The court also nullified all the actions taken after the controversial reinstatement.

Justice Abdullahi Liman gave the verdict in a suit filed by the dethroned emir, challenging the state government’s decision to remove him from the throne and install a new emir.

The judge held that the state government acted illegally by dethroning Sanusi without following due process.

He also declared that the state government’s action violated the emir’s fundamental human rights.

The court further ordered the state government to pay the sum of N10 million to Sanusi as damages for the violation of his rights.

Reacting to the verdict, Sanusi’s lawyer, Nureini Jimoh, SAN, expressed satisfaction with the judgment.

He said, “We are very happy with the judgment. It is a victory for democracy and the rule of law.

“The court has declared that the dethronement of Emir Sanusi was illegal, null and void. The court has also ordered the state government to pay the sum of N10 million to Emir Sanusi as damages for the violation of his rights.”

However, the state government has said it will appeal the judgment.

The state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Haruna Isah Dederi, disclosed this while addressing journalists at Government House, Kano, on Thursday.

He said, “We have received the judgment of the Federal High Court nullifying the dethronement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the emir of Kano.

“We are studying the judgment and we will appeal the decision of the court. We believe that the state government acted legally in dethroning Emir Sanusi.”
