Saturday brought a double celebration for Louis “Bud” Moreau of Bay St. Louis. Quilts of Valor presented and wrapped Moreau in a quilt all while commemorating his 96th birthday.

“The fact that all these years later he’s still remembered and thought of so well by everybody in the community who wanted to come out and see him is so important,” said family member Julia Johnston.

Julia and Ray Johnston, along with other family and friends, surrounded Bud at VFW Post 3253 for his special moment.

A Quilt of Valor is a handmade quilt awarded to a service member or veteran touched by war as a notion of thanks. Moreau’s extensive service to the country started with humble beginnings on the Coast.

“I know his first job was working Tito’s Gas Station on the corner,” said Ray. “I know he caught a 45-pound stingray off the railroad bridge one time.”

Bud enlisted in the Army Air Corps, which later changed to the U.S. Air Force during his service. He was deployed to Okinawa and Camp Polk and later served during World War II, the Korean War, and the Cold War.

For his service, Bud has been awarded a WWII Victory Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, and Army of Occupation Medal Japan. Now, on his 96th birthday, he adds a Quilt of Valor to the list.

“Being a part of the American Legion and the VFW was always important to him,” said Ray. “He served in all the capacity he possibly could. It’s well-deserved. He loved his country and he always talked about his service.”
