AMD AFMF 2 on Radeon 890M delivers up to 78% higher FPS
The technical preview of AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2 (AFMF 2) is now available for the latest Strix Point processors, and the company is promising up to 78% higher FPS with this frame-generation technology. It joins with Variable Graphics Memory (VGM), both of which are integrated into the latest Adrenalin software.
AMD says AFMF 2 delivers better frame generation through the new optimizations and turnable settings baked into the latest software. It also can offer lower latency, which enhances the responsivenessof the games when additional frames are in place.
As for Variable Graphics Memory, AMD says that it will enable users to dedicate up to 75% of the system RAM as VRAM for the iGPU. This isn't the same as shared graphics memory. As the company explains, if you have a Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 system with 32 GB of RAM and set the VGM at "medium," 8 GB of system memory will get converted to 8 GB of VRAM for the Radeon 890M iGPU.
Getting back to performance, AMD notes that the performance gain will depend on the settings and the game. However, per the company's internal tests, in Far Cry 6, AFMF 2 with VGM delivered up to 105 FPS from 65 FPS, up to 91 FPS in Horizon Zero Dawn from 61 FPS, and up to 100 FPS from 56 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077.
All those games were tested at 1080p with the "High" visual preset, FSR set to "Quality," and the TDP of the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 at 28W. Worth noting that AMD was also able to run Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy with VGM on Radeon 890M, which the company says doesn't run without VGM.
